The ramblings of things that make me…um, well…me.
I’m a big old dork, geek, nerd, whatever you want to call me. And even though I’m a somewhat shy person (hey, don’t laugh, I am!!!) I like to do silly things to make my friends laugh and be happy…or whatever. If I can make their day, it makes mine that much better. 🙂
This post is about one of those instances…this is the story of how young Billy Purgatory went to Disney World with The Book Hipster Family!
A couple months ago, I met Jesse James Freeman ( @JesseJFreeman ) on Twitter through Steven Luna ( @JoeVampireBlog ) . Steven was raving about this book “Billy Purgatory: I am the Devil Bird” that Jesse wrote and after much teasing back and forth about how the two of them were going to get me to read it (to hear more about that ended up…go here.), I read it. And LOVED it! It was even a featured book on my first official “Books you should get…” post! Well, as I’ve been doing lately, a lot of my reading is on my tablet…so, I don’t own a lot of hardcover/paperback books. It works for me, even though I do miss the feel of a good book in my hands…anyway, back to the real reason for this post…
I had entered a giveaway on Gale Martin’s blog for the release of her new book “Grace Unexpected”…and I WON!!! I won a cute tote…and BOOKS!!!!!!
…and one of the book included in the tote was none other than “Billy Purgatory: I am the Devil Bird”. I received my goodies just a few days before our family vacation to the House of Mouse, and Luna had brought up the idea of taking “Billy” with me on vacation and taking pics of him in random spots for fun. I immediately was hooked at the thought of one of the Disney Princesses (preferably Belle or Cinderella) with her nose stuck in the book and was in 100%…Billy was going with us to Disney World!!!
That would be the Kidlet hanging out with Billy…on a plane…before take off. She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of having to hold a book for me to take a picture of it, but I told her how much Jesse would love it and she was on board *ba dum dum*…I posted this picture to Facebook immediately…and I think I was right…
Well, we made it to Orlando and checked in to our on site resort…and on to the hotel room to get organized…Billy had other ideas.
We spent most of the morning checking out the sites and getting ourselves acquainted with how the park is set up and what direction to go next…you know…logical stuff that we should have thought of before even landing in Orlando…oops! As we were doing this, we noticed an area called a “Character Spot” and who do we see inside??? None other than THE MOUSE…MICKEY!!! Also, Pluto, Donald Duck, Minnie and Goofy!!! Now was Billy’s chance to make a good (ok…as good as he can) first impression with the man…er…mouse. He was a little shy, so he asked me to go along with him…
After meeting Mickey, I think Billy was a little overwhelmed, so he took the rest of the day to lay low and took in the sights with The Book Hipster family. Unfortunately, we got rained on at the very end of the day…soaked from head to toe! Billy got hit too. 😦 We all had to dry off once we got back to the hotel and called it a night.
No alarms…just the way we roll! Decided to take my shower and this is what I find…jerk is in my spot…sleeping!
He’s lucky he has a way with the words and charmed me out of being mad…which allowed him to tag along with us to Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Now, we were in Florida…in August…outside…it was hot! So, the Kidlet said on more than one occasion “I’m hot!”. Needless to say, Billy was testing my nerves as well. I think he was doing it on purpose. Well, I got him back…got him back good…
He was so mad at me that he didn’t talk to me the rest of the day and sulked. The tough life of a 10 year old skateboarder. *eye roll* Although, he did liven up a bit when we went to the Muppets 3D show and the Star Tours ride, but then who wouldn’t…it is the MUPPETS AND STAR WARS!!!
Billy was nice and didn’t hog the blankets this time, so he was allowed to go with us on our way to the big house…yes, that’s right…Magic Kingdom Day!!!
He hung out and did the rides…and after dinner, he got to meet a few special ladies…
First up was Cinderella and while she totally was into Billy, she knew that Prince Charming wouldn’t be happy, so she did the only thing she could think to do…she introduced him to Belle!!! Belle LOVES books!!! 😉
Belle’s eyes lit up when she saw Billy! She immediately wanted to know all about him…
After they schmoozed for a bit more, we had to go…there was a huge line of little kidlets just waiting to get to meet Cinderella and Belle too!
Today was our free day…we had done the 3 parks that we wanted. We spent the first part of the morning hanging out at the hotel and swimming at the pool. Then, relaxing to wait for a bus to take us back to the Magic Kingdom as we hadn’t done everything we wanted to the day before.
Once we got to the park, Billy said he had something he wanted to see…
Needless to say, it did not happen. The guards were warned ahead of time by someone (thanks a lot Jaq and Gus!) and Billy didn’t get very far. He was warned to stay away from the castle the rest of the day. It worked cause we had lots to go see before we had to get going to the Polynesian Resort for our dinner reservations.
Billy was very impressed with the food (and fire…and leis) at O’hana! By the way, did you know O’hana means “Family”? Apparently it does, so now Billy is family! *snicker*
The alarm was set and suitcases were packed before bed…we had to head back to Illinois in the morning. 😦
We had no clue what the day had in store for us…
About half an hour before the alarm was set to wake us all from our slumber (which meant I had 4 hours sleep because I went to bed about 2am after talking to some people on Twitter…oops!) the Kidlet was…er…um…sick. Yes, let’s just leave it at sick. 😉 Once at the airport, all of us (even Billy!) were escorted through TSA security thanks to the little one. That’s got to be a great bonus, right? No long line for pat downs or extensive bag checks!
Touchdown in Illinois and a short drive back home…and then…
However, this didn’t last long…
